The corridor alarm began as a single tone. It was so soft that no one moved until the floor vibrated. In the control room, a diagram of the eastern wing blinked from white to amber. One of the technicians leaned closer and pressed the call button twice. No one answered.

John and Lolita reached the glass walkway at the same moment. Water struck the far wall below them, then pulled back into the dark. A second impact shivered through the rail. Lolita counted the seconds until the emergency door would close. John stopped counting when something large passed beneath their feet.
