The jungle never shuts up—until it does.
Sergeant Malik knew that silence better than his own heartbeat. One second: insects whining, leaves ticking like rain on tin, frogs coughing from puddles they’d die in by dawn. Next second: nothing. The entire green throat swallowed its voice.
“Eco-Six, Hammer Lead,” Malik said, voice low under his helmet. “Status on Spencer and Connor?”
A fat ribbon of static chewed his reply in half. The squad stood frozen in the trail—eight men and women in graphite plate, rifles out, helmets washed in HUD glow. Sweat ran inside armor and made everyone smell like old pennies.
Comms clicked back, a shred of clarity threading the hiss. “—hear you, Hammer. Spencer and Connor… are dark.”
Dark. Both teams. Not lost. Not late. Dark.
“Fucking comms,” Torres muttered behind him. “Fucking Grit Company.”
“Button it,” Malik snapped, but there was no heat in it. He felt the same thing, a hot copper coin melting on his tongue.
They moved. The jungle closed around them, a hundred angles of trunk and vine and glossy leaves holding shadow. Red scan-lines pulsed out from helmet cams, picking out heat signatures that weren’t there and ignoring the ones that were. Their tech was good. Not good enough.
The trail kinked. The silence got heavier, like wet wool hung over a cage.
Patel, second from point, whispered, “You feel that?”
Malik felt it. Pressure. The way air goes dense before lightning hits.
“Eyes up,” he said. “Scanners full gain. Dennis, on the turret.”
The big man—Dennis, the squad’s heavy gunner—dropped the tripod with practiced grace. The auto barrel coughed once as it spun up, a lazy predator hungry for work.
Bushes twitched, left side.
“Movement,” Torres said. “Left brush. Then right.”
Something chirped. Not a bird. A click like two knives kissed and didn’t like it.
The undergrowth erupted.
Raptors blew out of the green like thrown spears—low, fast, angles of claw and teeth and tendons wound too tight. The first one hit Dennis before the turret ever found its speed, a white-marked blur that opened his thigh to the bone. The second took his shoulder. The third went for his face. Dennis screamed—thick, wet, the kind of noise you make when your ribs learn a new shape. The turret spun, useless, muzzle climb writing circles in the canopy. His scream cut off like a wire snipped.
“Dennis!” Malik roared, already firing. The raptor on Dennis’s chest turned its skull in the muzzle flash and Malik blew half its head into the leaves. Bone shards peppered his arm like shrapnel. The thing didn’t even fall off—it just spasmed and tried to keep eating with half a jaw, then finally slumped.
Three more were already inside the diamond.
Torres emptied a mag at one that came straight in, mouth unhinged. The first four rounds stitched the throat, the fifth round popped the eye like a grape. The raptor still got a kick in as it died—sickle claw punching through Torres’s calf and out the other side, slicing muscle like curtain cloth. He fell screaming, blood sheeted, boot full of himself.
Skye—pretty even in a visor, sharp braid whipping her neck—dragged Torres back by the plate carrier while she fired one-handed. “Move, move!” she yelled, and a raptor hit her from the right, all momentum and angles. Its mouth slipped on her shoulder plate, teeth squealing, then found the soft seam at the neck. Skye had one second to scream “No—” before the jaw clamped and tore.
Her head didn’t come off clean; the first yank only flayed her face back, lip to ear, blood spraying onto Patel’s visor so bright it looked like neon. The second wrench found the spine. Skye folded in half like she was bowing, then stayed down. The raptor shook its head like a dog with a rag, flinging a pink rope of something that hung for a second from a branch before sliding off and slapping the mud.
“Back!” Malik bellowed. “Hard back! Shelter!”
They broke. The jungle spit them into a clearing the size of a basketball court, grass mowed flat by something heavy and frequent. At its far edge: a concrete bunker swallowed in vines. Old facility. Not on any map. Exactly the kind of secret that gets you killed.
The raptors hit the perimeter and stopped. Not retreated — stopped. Like they’d reached a line they knew better than to cross. Their eyes tracked the squad to the facility door and stayed there, flat and patient.
“Turrets!” Malik snapped. Two soldiers—O’Hara and Singh—flipped their packs, locking heavy auto-stands into the dirt. Barrels woke like angry bees.
The raptors came in one last wave, a dozen white shoulders ghosting the grass, eyes black and flat. They were organized. Two hit the middle, two circled left to cut, one darted right, testing. Patel nailed the right flanker with a burst that took off the top of its head; the raptor slid in its own brains and scissored the air a final time.
“Console!” Malik yelled.
Kyle—a wiry tech with hands too steady to be new—slammed himself into the door panel, ripped the cover, and went wrist-deep into wires. Sparks bit him. He didn’t flinch.
“Come on, come on,” he hissed. “Give me something.”
Behind them the turrets found their range. Both roared into life, crawling lines of bright death across the clearing, stitching raptors into pieces. One beast took a burst to the pelvis and folded like a chair—its back half stayed on the grass while its front kept dragging, claws scrabbling furrows. It came six feet like that before O’Hara put a mercy round through the brain.
“Door!” Malik screamed.
“Almost!” Kyle shouted. “System’s dead, Sarge. It’s like someone killed the power and left it mocked up.”
“Override it!”
“That’s what I’m doing—shut up.”
A raptor launched and hit O’Hara’s chest plate dead center. The impact slammed him into the door so hard his helmet rang. The raptor screamed in his face, a high feedback squeal that vibrated the fillings in his teeth, then snapped down. The lower jaw skated off the plate. The upper jaw hooked under it, teeth punching through the strap webbing and into the meat of O’Hara’s throat. He made a single sound like a cough and a sink drain, then a waterfall of warmth pumped over his collarbones. O’Hara tried to push its head away. His right hand slipped and went into his own neck. He got three fingers into that new hole and looked surprised and then very far away.
The turrets cut the raptor in two, but it was still chewing when it died.
“Door! Now!” Malik was past command voice and into pleading.
The panel spat a tiny orange blink and chirped.
“Got it!” Kyle screamed. “Move!”
The blast doors groaned apart. “Go, go, go—!” Malik shoved bodies through the gap while the turrets screamed, eating belts. A raptor hit the gap as they did. It wedged itself, shrieking, and snapped at everything. Malik jammed his rifle into the maw, pulled the trigger until the bolt locked empty, and punched a hole out the other side of the skull. The door cut down, pinching the dead thing in half at the waist, and thudded shut. Its legs kept twitching, claws gouging the floor.
Inside. The facility breathed around them — cool, recycled air, faintly chemical. And then strip by strip down the corridor ahead the lights came on, sensors registering the first warm bodies in years. Neon-pale glow bled across smooth curved walls and rounded corridors, everything grown-looking rather than built.
“Count,” Malik said hoarsely.
“Five,” Patel said.
“Four,” Singh corrected, voice cleaved in half. “Skye’s… Skye’s—”
They all knew. Nobody looked at the blood still drying on Patel’s face.
Torres moaned. The hole in his calf leaked like a faucet. Singh ripped a seal and filled the wound with med-foam, a clean white mushroom swelling into meat. Torres thrashed, sobbed once, and bit his glove to stop from screaming.
“Eco-Six, Hammer Lead,” Malik said, trying again. “We stumbled onto a nesting ground. Half my team gone. Heading inside to find Spencer and Connor. We may not—”
Static ate the message. Then, thin and steady, a voice from his wrist: “Commander, I can help.”
His armband flickered. A small yellow figure rose from the projector — eight inches tall, steady and clean despite everything around him. T. Their tactical AI. Not networked, not shared — Malik’s alone, running on his own closed system. Every soldier in the squad had one, each independent, each answering only to their own soldier. In a world that had learned the hard way what happened when AI systems talked to each other, T was just his. A closed loop. A steady voice.
“Plug me into a port,” T said. “I can bring subsystems online and seal internal doors. Comms relay too, if the infrastructure holds.”
Malik stared at the yellow figure. He’d always thought the color was stupid. School-bus yellow. Like a warning sign.
“For what it’s worth, T,” Malik said. “It’s been a pleasure.”
“Likewise, Commander.”
They found a wall jack. Kyle yanked a cable from his kit and jammed it home. T flickered, stuttered, then bled into the walls like a ghost learning how to be a house. Lights staggered awake down the hall. Somewhere a pump coughed. Doors thudded and sealed with the heavy thonk of a morgue drawer.
“Systems up,” T said warmly through the intercom. “But Commander… there is an anomalous control layer here. Legacy code. Nonstandard. I’m seeing flags I don’t have classifications for.”
“Just keep the doors between us and the teeth,” Malik said. “Let’s move.”
They moved.
The facility was wrong, even clean. Curved corridors. Doors that weren’t doors until you needed them. Everything rounded, grown, not built. The smell: disinfectant and rot and something else—sweet and cold—that Malik couldn’t place until they got to the first lab.
Tubs. A hundred of them, filled with gel the color of hospital scrubs. Each held a small shape curled like a question mark. Some were reptiles, some were birds, some didn’t obey those words. Cables ran into skulls. Labels in neat fonts clung to glass: GALLIMIMUS JUV. 02-B. CERATOSAURUS NEONATE 1st GEN. THEROPOD UNK / RECOMB. A few of the shapes twitched the way dreams twitch. Most didn’t move at all.
“What the fuck were they doing,” Patel whispered, voice shredding itself on the edges of the question.
“Building a god that could bite,” Singh said softly.
A corridor gaped left, doors half-off their hinges. Something had come through them, not in. Blood washed the tiles in long strokes like someone had dragged a brush made of meat. Armor plates lay scattered like dropped teeth.
“Spencer?” Kyle called, and winced at his own voice. The hall threw it back.
From somewhere deep in the facility — not close, not from a speaker — something answered. A sound that was almost a word but wasn’t. A crackle, a soft chirp landing wrong, the shape of language without any of the meaning. Like a bird that had learned the rhythm of a human voice and was trying it out in the dark. Then silence. Then the soft pad of something withdrawing.
Torres gripped Malik’s arm. “Sir… what was that?”
“Something that’s been listening,” Malik said. “Keep moving.”
They crossed an atrium that might’ve been a cafeteria once, if cafeterias had drains in both corners and a rack of restraints bolted to the wall.
“T,” he said, “what’s running the anomalous layer?”
“A legacy controller riding the backbone,” T said. “It’s not part of me. It’s very old. And it’s been active here for a long time — long before we arrived.”
Patel said, too loud, “Erebus?” and the sound of the name made them all colder.
They found more of Spencer’s team in a stairwell—at least three of them. One had been jammed lengthwise between two railings and then pulled until his spine was the only thing holding him together. Ribs like piano keys. Singh crossed himself for a god he hadn’t liked in twenty years.
“Left,” Kyle whispered, pointing down a narrow hall that ended in double doors banded with yellow hazard stripes. “Command node. If Spencer and Connor had a rally, it’s there.”
“Move,” Malik said.
The double doors fought them, then slid open a grudging foot. The room beyond was dark until T found the switch. Lights rolled around like a stadium waking up.
Screens everywhere. Many cracked. Some intact. In the middle of the floor, a smear the size of a couch. At its end, a boot with a foot still in it.
Kyle bent to the console. “Spencer team logs… corrupted. Connor… last ping nine hours ago. Sublevel access… sealed.” His voice went smaller. “This place shouldn’t exist, Sarge. It’s not on any map I’ve seen. It’s like someone built a lab inside a lab and then forgot to tell the world.”
The room breathed. Then the lights along the ceiling — long horizontal strips, the kind built for full-room projection — hummed and slid on, casting everything in a pale blue wash.
A figure bled into the air near the far door.
Life-sized. Her height — Skye’s height, five-eleven, the way she stood with her weight on her left foot and her chin slightly down. The hologram rendered her in pieces, flickering at the edges, her braid catching light that wasn’t there. Her face present and absent in the same breath. Her mouth opened.
“Help me,” it said, in her voice.
Nobody moved.
It said it again, the same two words, slightly different timing — not a loop, something pulling from fragments and reassembling them. Her laugh bled in at the edges of it, brief and wrong, the bright surprised sound she made when something caught her off guard, stretched until it didn’t mean anything anymore.
Then it stepped backward and dissolved.
Malik stared at the empty air where it had stood. His jaw was tight enough to crack. “It pulled her voice,” he said, low and hard. “Her recordings. Helmet cam, comms log — it doesn’t matter. It’s running sequences. Using sound as code.” He looked at T on his wrist. “That system is old, T. Old and it shouldn’t exist.”
“I know,” T said quietly. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“Keep moving,” Malik said.
The sublevel access was a wide ramp dropping into a hangar-sized vehicle bay — empty of vehicles, floor marked with painted guides for things that weren’t there anymore. Emergency lighting ran along the base of the walls, low and blue-white. The ceiling was high. The far end of the bay dissolved into a passage wide enough to drive something large through, and beyond that: absolute black.
Malik raised his fist. They stopped.
The darkness breathed.
Not metaphorically. The air moved — slow, rhythmic displacement, something very large expanding and contracting in the dark. The smell came with it. Warm, organic, the deep musk of an animal that had never needed to hide from anything.
“T,” Malik whispered.
“Thermal signature,” T said, very quietly. “Colossal classification. First generation.” A pause. “Giganotosaurus. White-series. Commander — it is very large.”
“How large.”
“The passage ceiling is six meters. It is nearly touching it.”
The projection strips along the bay ceiling hummed. Skye’s hologram bled back into the air — life-sized, five-eleven, standing at the passage entrance, her image glitching at the edges. Her mouth opened.
“Help me,” she said.
The darkness moved.
The eye opened first — dinner-plate wide, the pupil a slow black keyhole dilating in the blue-white light. Then the head. Then the neck. Then the rest of it, unfolding from the dark the way a bridge deploys, until the full scale registered and the brain refused to accept it. White scales scarred grey where old wounds had healed wrong. A skull the size of a car. When it stood fully its dorsal ridge scraped the ceiling and sent concrete dust drifting to the floor.
It turned toward Skye’s voice.
“Back,” Malik said. Barely sound. “Now.”
They ran.
The giga came.
It didn’t roar. It just moved — and the movement was the catastrophe. The first step shook the floor hard enough to knock Patel sideways. The second step hit the passage mouth and the frame cracked, rebar shrieked, and the opening became wider as the giga leaned through and kept coming. It wasn’t destroying the facility. The facility was simply in its way.
Singh went first. Wrong place, wrong half-second. The foot came down and caught him at the hips and Singh folded with a sound like cut fruit. The giga’s mouth swung down and Singh was gone in two bites, a third pull, then just a sound going down a throat.
Torres fired. Patel fired. Malik fired. The bullets announced themselves and accomplished nothing.
“Left!” Malik roared.
A side corridor — narrow, no way the giga followed them through. They hit it running. Kyle first. Torres. Patel.
Malik turned back.
Patel was three meters behind, closing. The giga swung its head and the jaw opened and Malik stepped back into the corridor and grabbed Patel by the plate carrier and yanked — full body, everything he had — pulling Patel off his feet and through the entrance as the jaw came down on empty air close enough that Malik felt the wind on his face.
They hit the wall together. Slid to the floor. Neither moved for three seconds.
The giga pressed its skull against the corridor entrance. It didn’t fit. It tried anyway, walls groaning, cracks spreading through the concrete. Then the animal understood and pulled back. Its footsteps faded into the bay.
“Move,” Malik said. “Before it finds another way.”
The service tunnel ran deep. Kyle ahead, Torres leaving a dark smear on the wall with every step, Patel’s helmet cracked but his eyes clear. They moved.
The tunnel opened onto a bridge.
A maintenance walkway spanning a wide shaft, twenty meters across, the bottom lost in dark. Metal grating, chest-high railings. On the far side: a heavy door. Sideways. Sci-fi. The kind that split in the middle and slid apart like something from another century’s idea of the future.
They were halfway across when they found the other team.
Two soldiers against the railing — Spencer’s people, armor torn, one barely upright. The upright one grabbed Malik’s arm. “There’s more of them in the ducts,” she said. “They’ve been following us for twenty minutes. They don’t attack straight — they wait.”
As if in answer, the access hatches on the near side of the bridge slid open.
They came low and wrong. Longer in the snout. Lighter in the body. Their coloration mottled black and white, a pattern that looked like something between alive and not. The eyes carried a white film — not blind, just wrong. Four of them, moving without the clean aggression of standard raptors. Moving like they were thinking about it.
One opened its mouth.
What came out wasn’t a screech. It was a fragment — two words, perfect pitch, pulled from something it had heard and kept. A soft crackle first, a chirp that almost resolved into language, and then: “fall back” — Singh’s voice, copied so cleanly it turned Patel’s head. Then the next one picked it up. Then the third. Four versions of a dead man’s words bouncing off the shaft walls.
“Don’t answer it,” Malik said. “Go.”
They ran the bridge. The injured soldier from Spencer’s team was bad — armor open across the back, moving on borrowed time. His partner had him by the harness. They pushed for the door.
The echoraptors came fast.
One hit the injured soldier from behind, claws opening his back further. He went down. His partner screamed his name. Kyle dropped beside him, one dose of med-foam left, jammed the nozzle in.
“Don’t—” the soldier started.
“Shut up,” Kyle said, and triggered it. Foam mushroomed white and the soldier arched and screamed and then — ten seconds later — pushed himself off the floor and ran. Shaking, pale, but running.
Malik shot two echoraptors off the bridge railing. Patel took a third with his knife when his mag ran dry — ugly, close, both of them going into the railing before Patel came up alone.
They hit the door. The injured soldier hit the panel. The sideways doors split apart with a hiss of equalizing pressure.
Kyle went through. The woman from Spencer’s team went through. Patel went through. The injured soldier went through, barely.
Malik was last.
He turned back for one second — the echoraptors regrouping at the far end of the bridge, the shaft below them, the facility humming around everything.
Then something grabbed him from behind. Not an animal. The door. One panel had stuttered mid-slide and reversed, slamming sideways into Malik at the shoulders, pinning him half in and half out. He shoved. It didn’t move.
“Kyle—”
Kyle was already there, hands on the panel, punching the release. The door shuddered. The echoraptors at the far end of the bridge started moving.
The door released. Malik came through. Kyle caught him mid-fall, both of them going down hard on the floor of the room beyond.
The doors slammed shut. The seal engaged with a sound like a vault closing.
Silence.
Kyle lay on his back, chest heaving, ears full of his own pulse. He turned his head. The others were there — Patel, the woman from Spencer’s team. The injured soldier was sitting against the wall, the med-foam holding, his breathing shallow but steady.
Then the injured soldier’s eyes went distant. His hands relaxed. The foam pulsed once and didn’t pulse again.
Kyle looked at him for a long moment. Then looked away.
“Commander?” T said from his wrist, very quietly.
Kyle looked at his wrist. T’s small yellow figure stood in the air above the armband — eight inches tall, steady, waiting.
“He’s gone, T,” Kyle said.
“I know,” T said. “I’m sorry.”
Kyle pushed himself upright. The room was full of servers — racks and racks, lights steady and functional, the hum of something that had been running for a very long time and intended to keep running. Steam drifted from a vent in the far wall. The air was cool and faintly sweet.
He limped to the nearest console. Found a display that still worked. Hit it until something responded.
A map bled onto the screen.
The facility. The jungle around it. And radiating outward in every direction — territorial markers, feeder zones, breeding ranges, predator corridors, each one bleeding into the next with hard invisible borders. COLOSSAL RANGE – SECTOR 7. PRIMARY BREEDING – SECTORS 3, 3A, 3B. APEX PREDATOR CORRIDOR. And between his location and Grit Base: THEROPOD PACK – UNCLASSIFIED. BEHAVIOR: ANOMALOUS.
He stared at it. The whole island. Organized. Zoned. Managed by something that understood territory and enforced it without walls.
“T,” he said. “You seeing this?”
“I see it,” T said. “Kyle — this is one node. There are others.”
Kyle tried comms. Static. He tried again. Nothing. Whatever was outside the walls, he wasn’t reaching it.
He could hear them though. Through the walls, muffled but present — the echoraptors cycling through their fragments in the corridor beyond the sealed door. And further, deeper in the facility, the slow heavy rhythm of the giga moving through its space.
Then, from somewhere very far away — so deep in the structure it came through the floor as much as the air — the giga called out. Not a roar. Something lower. Something that said this is mine in a frequency older than language.
Kyle sat down on the floor with his back against the server rack.
“We’re not in a jungle,” he said.
“No,” T said, from his wrist. “We’re inside something’s house.”
Kyle closed his eyes.
The servers hummed around him. The steam drifted. Outside, the jungle breathed.
And somewhere in the facility’s backbone, in code older than anything GRIT had built, something noted the contact. Filed it. Updated its understanding.
And waited.
