Spaz & Friends

Spaz knew the living room by its sounds: the clock that never kept time, the kettle in the kitchen, Goldie shifting a stack of boxes she had promised not to touch. Today the room made a sound he had never heard. It came from the wall behind the sofa, like a page turning inside the plaster.

Hedgy arrived just as the wallpaper folded inward. On the other side was the same room, except the window looked out over a sky full of unfamiliar stars. Spaz put one paw on the floorboard and decided, for once, to wait before jumping.

Goldie tied a ribbon to the doorway so they could find it again. Hedgy carried a flashlight. Spaz carried nothing, which he insisted was a strategy. Together they crossed into the second room and found their own footprints already marked in dust.

The clock on the wall ticked backward. From somewhere upstairs came a laugh that sounded exactly like Spaz, only older. Goldie reached for the ribbon. It still led back to their door. On the other side, somebody pulled it gently toward them.
